new paintings

joe is painting again. the first painting he did was the view from our back deck. the second one is the fibers studio building on the cal state long beach campus. the one he is working on now is an invented landscape based on a few images we took on our salton sea excursion a few weeks ago. he has a larger 4 by 6 foot canvas ready to go and today we drove around after church taking pictures of cement river beds, roof tops and the textures of fences.

salton sea

we've been eyeing the salton sea since joe found it on google earth a few weeks ago and couldn't wait any longer to get a sense of just what was it was like. for the first time since living in california, we had rain on and off for a few hours and saw flashes of thunder in the not so distance horizon.

we visited the north shore, bombay beach, niland, and salvation mountain before heading back. it was a great adventure and we hope to visit again soon.

smog collection and hand carved toothpicks

i had a great time today checking out two art exhibits featuring LA artist kim abeles: one solo show at Labond Art Gallery at Loyola Marymount University and another, a preview of make:craft which opens tomorrow night at the Ben Maltez Gallery at Otis college of art and design. i appreciate all the time i can find to explore LA and get to know my fellow fibers grad students. today I feel, more than ever, that i have found the perfect place for continued art study.

another highlight of the day: the rummage sale at Otis and the $3 Yves Saint Laurent earth toned sweater skirt i scored with funky gold toned patterned detailing at the waist and bottom hem in perfect condition.

i can finally say that i am starting, slowly, ever so slowly, to like it here...

and summer continues...
